Students Change the World has been happy to highlight the noticeable efforts UGent1010 makes. RestFest and StuJardin are two projects that represent this student organization aptly. But next to the organization of the creative projects UGent1010 is an organization that acts concretely for the students, staff of the UGent and the envorinment they work in.

UGent1010 is een studentengroepering die zich inzet voor een duurzame wereld. We focussen ons op het reilen en zeilen aan de Universiteit van Gent, maar ook op de meer persoonlijke sfeer van studenten, werknemers, professoren, …
Door concrete actie probeert Ugent1010 de wereld een klein beetje duurzamer te maken. Duurzaamheid betekent in deze context rekening houden met de korte en lange termijn-impact van de zaken die in de wereld gebeuren. Van recyclage van gsm’s tot kleren uitwisselen (vb. Swishing, nvdr) tot debatten, we willen samen laten zien dat duurzaamheid niet zomaar belangrijk of sociaal wenselijk is, maar vooral ook leuk, mooi en gemakkelijk kan zijn! UGent1010 heeft geen uitgebreide standpuntenverklaring, juist omdat ze een platform wil zijn voor discussie, innovatie, onderneming en inspiratie. Uiteenlopende termen en thema’s zoals deeleconomie, stadslandbouw, transitie, mobiliteit, sociale rechtvaardigheid en energie kunnen de revue passeren.
De concrete actie vertaalt zich enerzijds in het sensibiliseren van studenten en personeel aan de UGent en anderzijds beleidsmatige veranderingen aan te brengen aan de UGent. Sensibilisatie gebeurt door het organiseren van activiteiten waarin alternatieven worden aangeboden voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd of gewoon een beetje nieuwsgierig is. Aan het begin van elk semester wordt in een open vergadering beslist welke activiteiten dat zullen zijn, waarbij elke enthousiasteling mee op de boot kan springen voor organisatie, nadenken, … Aan het beleid van de UGent wordt gewerkt door het uitwisselen van ideeën met de milieudienst en door met hen samen te werken.
UGent1010 wil graag een toegankelijke en inspirerende manier vormen voor duurzaamheid, amusement, een plekje waar je je idee kwijt kunt én een plek waar je mensen kunt ontmoeten!
UGent1010 is a student organization that is committed to a sustainable world. We do not only focus on the general management of the University of Ghent but we are also a strong advocate for a good, agreeable atmosphere amongst and for students, employees, professors etc., which we help to build and sustain.
By means of concrete actions UGent1010 tries to make the world a little more sustainable. In this context, sustainability means taking into account the short- and long-term impact of developments happening in the world. Highlighting a variety of sustainable efforts—from recycling cellphones to exchanging clothing (e.g. Swishing, ed.) and debates—the members of UGent1010 want to show together, with their various projects and efforts, that sustainability is not only important or desirable from a social point of view, but that, first of all, sustainability can be fun, pleasing, beautiful and easy! Ugent1010 does not have a comprehensive position statement, precisely because she wants to offer a platform for discussion, innovation, entrepreneurship and inspiration. A diverse list of terms and themes are and can be addressed: sharing economy (or shareconomy), urban agriculture, transition*, mobility, social justice and energy.
On the one hand, concrete action refers to increasing awareness around the aims of sustainability and why these are necessary. Both students and the personnel of the UGent are provided with useful, accurate and extensive information. On the other hand, UGent1010 aims to effect policy-related changes at the UGent. We try to inform and increase awareness—the first concrete action referred to—among the students and staff by organizing activities that offer alternatives (sustainable alternatives for daily and work-related activities, ed.) to anyone who is interested or even only somewhat curious. What exactly those activities will be is decided during an assembly that is open to anyone, this assembly is held at the beginning of each semester. During these meetings, it is also possible for any enthusiast to join our team whether he or she is more interested in the organizational aspects of UGent1010 or wants to think of how one can make the world more sustainable and launch a new project …
The other concrete action UGent1010 undertakes, i.e. effect policy-related changes at the UGent, leans on the exchange of ideas with and on important collaboration with “milieudienst” (environmental center or service, ed.).
UGent1010 aims to be an accessible and inspirational way for students and staff to commit to sustainability and fun, it is a place where you can share your ideas and where you can meet people!
