Sustainability for Students

Our mission is sustainability. We want to preserve our planet for future generations. We want to live in an ecological and healthy way. And we want to do so by lowering the threshold of the ‘ideology’ of durability and sustainability.

If we want to make a change, we have to be the change. And we want to set an example to everyone who can be that change. Students could form the basis of public support for change.

Thanks to our website, we want to share that sustainability can be a part of our daily life, even for students with lower budgets. We want to provide information, make students aware of the existing projects and organisations and make durability and engagement interesting and appealing. We want to help students take the step towards a sustainable way of living.

Students can change the world. They are the future. And our future needs for us to be sustainable now. That is why we focus on a practical approach of sharing tips and tricks. To make it easier and maybe even more fun to be sustainable! At the same time we stay informative and use the eagerness to learn of students to inspire them to make a change in their behaviour.

Janne Pisters

My name is Janne and I am a master student Cultural Studies at KU Leuven. I used to study History in the Netherlands. During my studies I usually filled my free time with volunteer work. One of the topics I am really passionate about is sustainability (especially sustainability in education). I believe that making people aware, is the first step in making a change.

Youths and especially students are very important for our future. These people are the creative minds that will shape our worlds in the forthcoming times. The condition of our earth is serious and there should be something done about it. That being said, I think a more practical approach to make students aware of their behaviour with the little things they do in daily life is maybe a better approach. Everybody can make a difference, even in the little things they do. I hope this more positive, practical approach works better than the negative horror story they are often too confined with. So, I really hope you guys enjoy the site and use the tips and tricks we have to offer!

Anke Seynaeve

Hi, I'm Anke and I'm a master student Cultural Studies at KU Leuven. I have a bachelor's degree in Language and Literature (English and French). I started this bachelor at KULAK (Kortrijk), after which I studied abroad thanks to the Erasmus program at Nottingham in England. The second semester of the third year, I settled in Leuven. I also have a masters degree in Business Communications at KU Leuven.

I use all my free time to read, to write, to paint and to watch movies and series. These last two hobbies are getting more serious since I started up my own blog on series and films. Furthermore, I love organising parties, although I hardly get to chance to do so.

Recently, my boyfriend and I moved in together, so all the responsibilities adults have, I now have as well. It's not easy being a student and paying bills, so I had to come up with a lot of ways of saving money. And yet, all these things seem rather self-evident to me! Sustainability is the only way we'll provide a future for our children, so we have to start it now! We can't wait anymore like previous generations - it's on our shoulders now. And therefore, we want to make a change. And the change starts with you!

We won't bore you with what is good and what is not. That is for you to decide. But we've come up with all the things that can help you make up your mind! Or at least make you aware of the changes that are already going on!

Lenore Lampens

My name is Lenore Lampens and I study Cultural Studies at KU Leuven. Before I came to Leuven I studied for four years in Ghent getting both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Languages and Literature: English and Italian.

In my free time I like to read all kinds of stories and other writings: novels, short stories, poems or blogs. I also enjoy being creative by doing a variety of activities such as drawing, playing the piano or writing myself. During the weekends I play tennis (and during the summer I occasionally teach at junior summer tennis camps) and usually, on Sundays, I make a trip. I love to go to museums and all kinds of exhibitions, visit a historical building or go enjoy nature in Wallonia.

My background in literature and linguistics has made me aware of the stories and narratives that circulate in our society. One of these stories that frequently returns—and I hear this story from people who come from various places and have different backgrounds—is the story or idea that to have a sustainable lifestyle is a rather high-priced commitment. People are often thinking of local food products that are produced in a more time-consuming way (or handcrafted objects) when they express this idea. Noticing that this influential idea can make people more hesitant about what they can really do for a sustainable world, I believe that an important aim of a website that has sustainability as its message is to nuance the idea of “expensive and, therefore, inaccessible sustainable efforts”.

With this website I hope to get the message across that there exist all kinds of small efforts people can make that help create a more sustainable world. It is true that creating a sustainable market does not happen overnight. But there are already many other things people can do at their homes and in their daily lives that are a step in the right direction, building the path toward a more sustainable future. I hope to make specifically students aware of the possibilities already out there and to stir their creativity. For, students are the building blocks for change and yet often this group only has a limited budget. Therefore, students might think sustainability is not really something they can do.

I hope this website will offer all the tips, tricks and creativity students need to make the step toward sustainability without it meaning an assault on their budget. Enjoy exploring the possibilities out there!

Saar Cornelis

Hi, my name is Saar Cornelis and I’m a master student Cultural Studies at KU Leuven. Before I started this master, I studied Communication Science at KU Leuven but I wanted more so here I am, still studying!

During my free time, scouting is one of the things I’m most passionate about. As a head leader of a group of 250 children and 30 leaders, I know how to keep busy! Another thing I love to do is cooking! Not just cooking, but making something that puts a smile on my friends faces. The sunny side of cooking for a group is the low cost and ofcouse, there will be less to waste!

I hope that you will realize through this website that you don’t need to be a environmental guru to help the world a little bit. By small tips and tricks you can really make a difference! It’s profitable for you and for your children and grandchildren to come.

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to share it with us!
