Solidarity means sharing the resources the world offers. Solidarity means the equal treatment of people. To redistribute what has already been manufactured and to give not only to the rich but also to help the poor. To understand that to help the poor, build a community, offer goods to anyone, does not mean to produce more or to exploit more resources. To give and share what we already have is the corner stone of solidarity.
One person in three in the world lives in poverty. Oxfam is determined to change that world by mobilizing the power of people around the globe. They save lives and help rebuild livelihoods when crisis strikes. They campaign so that the voices of the poor influence the local and global decisions that affect them.
If you are looking for a book, a nice gift or something to wear, you might want to remember to pay a visit to one of the 45 Oxfam second-hand shops in Belgium. As a student it is an ideal way to fight for sustainability: the products are affordable and the items sold you’ll probably need. Every penny you spend helps to support Oxfam's wonderful work around the world. At the same time you also promote sustainable consumption and make your contribution to a vibrant social economy.
So, by shopping at an Oxfam second-hand shop, you reduce waste, you contribute to a more social society in Belgium, you support Oxfam projects worldwide and it's good for your wallet as well. Sustainable consumption at its best!
Also remember that you can donate your own second-hand-objects when you can no longer use them. Maybe you bought a book for school but now are no longer in use of it. Certainly another student will be able to make good use of it.
