StuJardin: Kitchen gardens in the heart of the city

Ugent1010 is an initiative of students enrolled at the university of Ghent. They have a number of wonderful projects under their guidance. One of those projects was already noticed by Students Change the World: the RestFest initiative. Now UGent1010 shares with us yet another of their efforts for a more sustainable world. The StuJardin helps students and University-staff grow local food products.

(English translation below)

Enerzijds organiseert StuJardin vier diverse groeiavonden over stadstuinieren.

At StuJardin, together with students, we grow our own vegetables, fruit and herbs in the heart of the city. By introducing students to this initiative we want to convince them that urban gardening is fun and necessary. The project is a step toward an urban society that is more dependent on, if not hinges on, self-sufficiency and short supply chains. For it is more sustainable and more environment-friendly to consume your own locally grown vegetables than to buy food that has travelled quite a distance before it ends up on your plate.

The project is build around two components. On the one hand, StuJardin organizes four diverse “education nights” on urban gardening. Everyone will find something to his or her liking: a gardener-at-yourplace-evening, a workshop on the grafting of trees, a moment to learn about composting techniques for people living in the city (e.g. students living in their “kot” as we say in Dutch) and an evening on curative herbs. Next to these “education nights”, there is also the kitchen garden, which is permanently maintained, at the faculty of the bio-engineers. A second permanent kitchen garden will be opened on the eight of Marsh 2016 at campus Sterre. In this kitchen garden students and academic staff will be able to grow their own vegetables, fruit and herbs. Every week we meet (what we call our “work time”) to sow, plant, weed and harvest. This moments of “work time” are guided by our wonderful kitchen-garden-managers.

StuJardin is a project by GSR, JNM and UGent1010.
