Ugent1010 is an initiative of students enrolled at the university of Ghent. They are committed to a sustainable future. One of their projects, called RestFest, addresses the way in which we deal with food. Students Change the World believes this to be a wonderful project showing that students can make a difference. Having asked the students from Ugent1010 to share their message with us, they wrote an article.
RestFest is a bicycle cart that was made by students in order to make possible several kinds of cooking and sharing with food surplus on the street. Instead of only talking about the enormous amount of food being wasted every day and the millions of hungry people and exploited farmers, they wanted to do something about it, while having fun at the same time. On the cart, several boxes of food can be placed while biking to groceries and bakeries that donate their leftover vegetables, fruit and bread. When stationed as a market stall, the cart can be used to cook on and to distribute food on the street for free or for a free contribution.
From time to time, the group of students and other Ghent inhabitants around RestFest go cook on the street or on special events. They prefer to be at places where people in need pass by, but every passenger can have a soup and a talk. Doing this, they fill some hungry stomachs, get to know new people and show that money is not all that. Instead of expecting people to inform themselves about injustices and alternatives in the mass of information today, RestFest comes to the people by itself and brings a message to the street: We often consume too much and are too unconscious about the reasons behind the cheap prices we pay for our food (and other products). The ones with bad luck are the people who made the products for us, and the burden falls on the environment (human and non-human, present and future). There are lots of alternatives that RestFest wants to show, especially in Ghent, such as shops and delivery systems with food directly from the farmer.
Everyone can join cooking, propose an out-of-the-box idea, or use the kitchen bike for an event, as long as the message is the same. The only thing to do is to send a message on Facebook, mail us, or go and look for RestFest on the street!
In April 2015 this idea won the Groene Ruijter Sustainability Award of the University of Ghent, which offered 500 euros to make to cart.
