With the fast changing fashion trends we all feel like wearing something new once in a while. But maybe “new” is not the correct word: we feel like wearing something different, we want to be original and we hope to create our own style while still being trendy.

Many people who are looking for something new to wear—maybe for the holidays—go to the store looking for that new dazzling dress or shirt that will be the talk of the evening. They want to look good. This idea of trendiness, of people complementing you on your good eye for fashion, has become somewhat synonymous with the notion of newness. This, however, is absolutely not a must. It is not the newness of a piece of clothing that people see and, therefore, it is not what they compliment or notice as trendy. It is the originality of your style, its uniqueness: the colors, the combinations, and the fit of your dress for instance. These are all qualities you can also find in nearly new fashion. It is definitely worthwhile to start considering vintage clothing shops since you can be trendy and think of how clothing is produced and sold all at once.

It is possible to keep up with the fast changing fashion industry and be sustainable at the same time. In fact you can be different, original, stylish or trendy by being sustainable. Buying vintage clothing or nearly new fashion is always a statement. You are telling something to the world. You are telling the world you care for fashion without it having to mean that the fashion industry is exploitative or polluting.

One of the stores you might want to visit is Fann. It is a fashion store in Ghent where you can buy nearly new fashion. You can also drop off the clothes you will no longer wear. The clothes you find in the store are sold for a decent price (max. 1/3 of the original price). What is more and noteworthy is that clothes that have not been sold after two months are not simply thrown out. These clothes either return to the original owner or they are donated to charity.

Many of the clothes that are not sold or picked up by their original owner are donated to the nonprofit organization Kras vzw: a Ghent based organization committed to creating better living conditions for the poor. Fann therefore not only helps creating a world that is greener, it also contributes to a more humanitarian world.
