As a student it is not only expensive to buy a vacuum cleaner or a hairdryer, it is also something you need to store while you might not even use it that often or not for a very long time. Peerby can offer a solution to this problem and, most importantly, it helps to create a more sustainable market.
When you have to vacuum your place or 'kot', it does not take very long and it is not something you have to do everyday. So it seems strange to buy a vacuum cleaner, which is not only expensive but also not very sustainable. It is not necessary for everybody to own a vacuum cleaner, since this is a product that is easy to share. If we would all start sharing objects it would be greener since less resources will be spent on producing an otherwise oversupply of vacuum cleaners. And when you are throwing a party is it really necessary to buy your cocktailglasses, beer tap and barbecue? Unless you are aiming for a career as party planner of course.
Peerby is aware of this āwaste marketā, which is especially true if you consider that some people might buy a vacuum cleaner never to use it! Since it is a product you do not need every single day, why not share it with your neighbors to use it to its full potential? On the website of this green initiative we read that ā80% of the things we own are used no more than once a monthā.
In Ghent there are already 882 neighbors from which you can borrow an object. In Leuven 428 neighbors are sharing vacuum cleaners, hairdryers, waffle irons and much more. And in Kortrijk you can get to know better 66 neighbors living near you.
A jigsaw, a high pressure cleaner, a screwdriver, a toaster, a ladder, a party tent, a beer tap, a barbecue, cocktail glasses, a disco ball, a suitcase, a cat travel basket, a tent etc. etc. Sharing this wide variety of objects, you are connecting with your neighbors, you are saving money and you help create a greener and more sustainable world by making better use of resources.
This initiative is really great since it helps us understand that sustainability, community building and affordable living go hand in hand!
