Accessible Sustainability and the 2de Handsshop

When you hear the word sustainability you might think of locally produced products or handcrafted objects that require a lot of labor and time. You might conclude that this kind of labor results in a rather high market price and that, therefore, sustainability is expensive. But maybe, even though it is a current belief, this perception does not always hold true?

There are a number of projects organized by small communities that manage to keep the prices of their products or the “entrance fee” to the community low. You will find more than one website here that present communities which cultivate local products and can still be accessible for people with a lower budget, like students. Furthermore, the concept of sustainability does not only encompass creating products that have a long life-expectancy or that have—e.g. for food—been produced in a way that is harmless to our planet. Sustainability is also the reuse of already existing and durable products with the aim of observing a decrease in production statistics. Financial accessibility to these initiatives is not much of an issue here. There are many secondhand shops where you can buy used objects for a reasonable price.

At Ghent, for instance, there is a wonderful store called 2de Handsshop. Here you can both buy and sell all kinds of objects: furniture, electronic devices, decorative objects, books and many other items. This shop is a great environment for students to start thinking “sustainable”, without having to dig deep in their wallet. What is more, by donating your own used items, you can even gain some pocket money. If one of your belongings is sold for 15 euros or less, 50% of the sold price goes straight into your own pocket. When the price goes above 15 euros you even get 60%.

There is one more reason for which you should remember the 2de Handsshop in Ghent. When you are cleaning up your place and you are not sure what is valuable, reusable and where to go with your now unused belongings, 2de Handsshop can make a value estimate of all your household properties. This way you will know what has value and what is reusable and you can make a contribution to a more sustainable world.

To sum up, if you are looking for a place where you can help create a sustainable market without your contributions having to go above the average market prices, the 2de Handsshop is a place for you. Here you can start living sustainable and you can buy exclusive and original objects that help you understand that sustainability is a way of life worth living for.
